Does awkwardness flutter in your stomach when someone suggests you do something new? You miss positive experiences if you stick with familiarity and comfort to avoid niggling fear. Do the same things and you’ll get the same results. If you don’t like your life, stretch your boundaries and try new activities, meet different people, and expand your interests. Only then will your rut vanish. Thus, step out of your comfort zone!
The comfort zone, as defined by Lifehacker, is a “behavioral space where your activities and behaviors fit a routine and pattern that minimizes stress and risk,” the keywords to focus on here are stress and risk.
In our comfort zone or another term, our safe place. We feel safe, secure and we know the outcome.
When we decide to lace up our proverbial shoe and step outside of our comfort zone, we are taking a risk. There is uncertainty to this, there is stress and there is anxiety. But why do we look at it this way and feel these feelings? Simply put, we prefer to feel safe. We are designed this way. Safety equals good and the brain likes that.
“Move out of your comfort zone. You can only grow if you are willing to feel awkward and uncomfortable when you try something new.” - Brian Tracy
